Country Of Origin: Venezuela 🇻🇪 & Colombia 🇨🇴

History: The arepa dates all the way back to the pre-Columbian era and originated from indigenous tribes from the areas that is now modern day Venezuela, Colombia & Panama. The instruments that were used to make the flour for the arepas, and the clay slabs on which they were cooked, were often found at archaeological sites in the area. Although it has not been specified in which country the arepa was cooked for the first time, it has been possible to define the oldest dates of the presence of maize in Colombia and in Venezuela. For instance, in Colombia, the first record of the existence of corn dates from about 3,000 years ago, while in Venezuela the estimate is about 2,800 years ago. Throughout it's history, the arepa has remained unchanged from the arepas that pre-Columbian native peoples would have consumed, making the arepa one of the few pre-contact traditions that have endured over the years since colonization. The name arepa is said to be derived from erepa, the word for cornbread in the Cumanagoto language.

Arepas are a staple in several South American countries, most notably in Colombia and Venezuela. These soft, thick patties are usually made with ground maize kernels, but can also be made with maize flour or maize meal, which is then mixed with water and salt, (sometimes even butter, eggs, milk or oil). Baked, boiled, fried, grilled or steamed, arepas can vary in size, flavor and color, and are often stuffed with meat, cheese, plaintains, tomatoes or avocados. These amazing little patties date back to pre-Columbian times, and aren't going anywhere anytime soon. They are simply delicious!
