Country Of Origin: Serbia 🇷🇸
Cevapi, or Cevapcici, are homemade sausages traditionally from the Balkans area. These Southeastern European grilled sausages are filled with smoky flavor goodness and typically served with flatbread and onions. Although these sausages are popular in many European countries (Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovakia and others), their unique origin is most commonly attributed to the country of Serbia under Turkish rule during the Ottoman Empire.

History: From their conquest of Bosnia in 1463 to to their departure in 1878, the Ottoman Empire has had a vast influence on the Balkan region of Southeastern Europe, especially on their cuisine. Balkan food today reverberates with Turkish influence, with dozens of dishes from the Ottoman collection taken and adapted to Balkan tastes. One of those dishes is Cevapi. The word ćevap (the local term for cevapi) evolved from the Persian kebab, meaning “grilled meat” or “meat on a skewer.” This term was adopted by the Ottomans and taken with them to the Balkans. Cevapi most closely resembles Turkish köfte.
